Avast VPN causes problems with a Printer

I recently helped a client with an issue where the printer would go “offline” sometimes when his wife printed something from her iPad. The only way to get things to work again would be to turn off and turn on the printer again.

The root cause of the issue was a combination of IPv6 addressing in the printer and the VPN. For some reason the Avast VPN does not like IPv6. I made two changes that seems to have resolved the issue.

  1. I turned off IPv6 in the printer via the printer web console.
  2. I set up the printer with a fixed IP instead of a dynamic IP address

After doing the two things above.. the printer no longer has this issue.
